Summer Can’t Come Soon Enough!
Environmental Justice and Racial Equity simulation, social media highlight, community event awareness!
Hello everyone!
It seems crazy that it’s mid-May already! Yet, summer can’t come soon enough for us!😉
Let’s jump into the announcements!
Announcements:
1.) Next Project
As all of you know by now, we postponed meetings in mid-March until summer, but will be re-starting meetings in June- and in July, we are hosting on our next project! We’re trying to get together a small group to go to the Herrick Library and engage in our Environmental Justice and Racial Equity Simulation. It’s a fascinating simulation: everyone is assigned a specific character, it’s set in the context of the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and it involves playing a giant board game which demonstrates the consequences of neighborhood redlining, intergenerational trauma, discrimination, and legislative barriers to equity.
This is different from our past events in that the intention is that it be small, only 10 people, 15 at most, and we’ll know who all of the attendees are beforehand.
It’s also different from many community education events in that it is very, VERY interactive. 😉😊
If you’re interested in joining us, reply to this email with a “YES” and we’ll put you on the list of people who are interested and reach out later with more details!
2.) Social Media
Follow us on social media; don’t miss out! We have several important announcements coming out this month. Make sure that you are following @hollandsunrisemovement on Instagram and Facebook so that you stay up to date with the latest updates.
3.) Sunrise Holland 2.0
We’re running this announcement a second time in case anyone missed it last week, as it’s one of the most important announcement’s we’ll have for you pre-June.:)
Get ready for Sunrise Holland meetings to re-start this summer, June 2022! Two internal members have been working to revamp everything, including the leadership team, meeting structure, and community involvement goals. In Sunrise Holland 2.0, we’ll focus more on educating ourselves about various issues so that we have a better understanding of what we are fighting for. We also hope to improve on our modes of activism by balancing protest presence and community education.
We are looking forward to these new changes (and more!) and we hope that you are too!
We love seeing new faces at our active member meetings, so make sure to attend! If you’ve been to our meetings in the past, we look forward to seeing you again! For more details about meeting times and event dates, please check our website at the link below.
4.) Local Community Event Highlight
US 31 Highway Cleanup: The Black River Green Team will be cleaning up a section of the US 31 highway near the community college (GRCC Lakeshore Campus) and the restaurant On The Border on May 21 at 10am. All materials will be provided, and there will be snacks & pastries for volunteers (yay! 🍪). This is a great way to create a positive environmental impact, and (for students) to get community service hours in! If you can attend, please take 15 seconds to RSVP “yes” at the link below!
Thanks, as always, for staying updated! If you’re in Holland, go enjoy some tulips this week, and if not, do something fun to relax! Have a great week.:)
Best,
Amanda (Sunrise Holland Active Member)
