The Adventures of Sunrise Holland
SIMULATION RELEASED!! Subcommittee plans, upcoming meetings, and more!
1.) Environmental Justice & Racial Equity SIMULATION RELEASED!!
We are so thrilled to announce the release of our Environmental Justice and Racial Equity Simulation!
Part-presentational, part-discussion, and part-board game, this simulation is highly interactive and will give you a deeply thought-provoking, motivating experience. 🤔
The simulation explores environmental racism in the context of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
In the board game portion, players have to buy a house and obtain a loan, while some are experiencing the simulated disadvantages of redlining and others have unfair advantages in the game.
Our Racial Equity and Environmental Justice Subcommittee will be putting on a community event hopefully in April, in which we’ll conduct this simulation with people from the Holland community as players! We’ll keep you updated 😊
2.) Ottawa County Sustainability Report
Hannah Huggett, director of Sunrise Holland, has been participating in a working group that is developing a Sustainability Report for Ottawa County. There’s been a lot of progress made on the report this past month. The leader of the working group, the director of the Ottawa County Department of Strategic Impact, is bringing the report outline to the Ottawa County commissioners this month, and the full report will hopefully be published later this year!
3.) Reminder: Composting Framework
Back in December, we partnered with the Black River Green Team to begin work on a framework which any school can use to develop a composting program. We’re so thrilled that it’s published, and we’d love for you to check it out! If you know of any students/parents/teachers at other local schools who may be interested in this effort, please pass this along to them! 😊
4.) Subcommittees
We have TWO subcommittees now (which replace our full-group, active member meetings) and we hope you’ll consider joining one!
First, our Racial Equity and Environmental Justice Subcommittee works on environmental racism through specific initiatives, including but not limited to community events, community education, framework development, social media advocacy, and lobbying.
Our next meeting is February 27 at 6:30pm, if you’d like to join!
Second, our Community Energy Subcommittee is aiming to support every stage of planning and implementation of the Holland community Energy Plan, to develop a training teaching people how to use our Municipal Community Energy Plan Development Framework, to join the Sustainable Education Advisory Group in hosting community events based upon monthly environmental themes (i.e. January 2023 theme of energy use) throughout the entirety of 2023, and to represent Sunrise Holland when necessary in giving public comment at energy-related meetings in the City of Holland.
Thanks again for staying informed about our efforts, and we hope you have a wonderful week!
Take care,
Hannah from Sunrise Holland
