Updates and What-Have-Yous
Tulip Time Run Recycling, SUNRISE HOLLAND 2.0, invasive species cleanup, and social media!
Hello friends!
Reporting for Sunrise Holland, this is Katelyn. I hope that you are enjoying the warmer weather as we begin the month of May!
Announcements:
1.) Social Media
Follow us on social media; don’t miss out! We have several important announcements coming out this month. Make sure that you are following @hollandsunrisemovement on Instagram and Facebook so that you stay up to date with the latest happenings.
2.) Tulip Time Run Recycling
THIS WEEKEND! Sunrise Holland is supporting a TULIP TIME RECYCLING initiative led by Ken Freestone, former Residential Energy Advisor of the City of Holland, and the Black River Green Team! As Tulip Time is getting closer, we are recruiting volunteers to supervise recycling stations at the Tulip Time Run. It is a great way to help the community and support sustainability, and, if you are a student, you can get community service credit for volunteering!
We must work together to prevent contamination of the recycling at the Run so that we can divert a MASSIVE amount of waste from the landfill. This, of course, benefits the planet, AND it helps ensure that the plastics that harm our health aren’t being reintroduced into the environment, as they are when we throw plastic away instead of recycling.
Please SIGN UP to volunteer at the link below!
3.) Sunrise Holland 2.0!
Get ready for Sunrise Holland meetings to re-start this summer, June 2022! Two internal members have been working to revamp everything, including the leadership team, meeting structure, and community involvement goals. In Sunrise Holland 2.0, we’ll focus more on educating ourselves about various issues so that we have a better understanding of what we are fighting for. We also hope to improve on our modes of activism by balancing protest presence and community education.
We are looking forward to these new changes (and more!) and we hope that you are too!
We love seeing new faces at our active member meetings, so make sure to attend! If you’ve been to our meetings in the past, we look forward to seeing you again! For more details about meeting times and event dates, please check our website at the link below.
4.) Local Community Event Highlight
The Kaufman Interfaith Scholars and Friends of Grand Rapids Parks are hosting an invasive species cleanup event at Aman Park on May 14th! Activities include building buckets and boot cleaning stations, and pulling the invasive weed: garlic mustard.
Garlic mustard is detrimental to the environment because it crowds out native plant species while releasing chemicals into the soil that inhibit plant growth.
Help our planet and our parks by attending this event! Sign up using the link below.:)
Social Media Highlight:
Thank you for staying updated! As always, there is a lot going on, and we really appreciate your involvement. If you are currently in the Holland area, make sure to spend some time enjoying the tulips this weekend (and sign up to help with recycling at the event! ;-).
Best,
Katelyn (Sunrise Holland Active Member)
